Getting started with roulette
First things first, in order to have a great roulette experience, you have to know how to play the game. Luckily, roulette is one of the easiest casino games to play. And we’re going to take you through the rules step by step.
Learning how to play is easy. But what takes skill is knowing how to bet. You can create different odds for yourself with strategically placed bets, to improve your chances of winning. But don’t worry, we’re going to take you through that in just a moment too!
One of the best things about modern roulette websites is that they have more than one version for you to choose from. And with the invention of live casinos, you can now try your hand at roulette with a real croupier.
So, once you’ve mastered the game, you can choose which type of roulette you want to play. As well as if you want to go up against a live dealer.
But before all of that, let’s look at how to play and bet on roulette.
Roulette Rules
Roulette is known for it’s beautiful wheel and gorgeous green table, where you place your bets. And you need to know how both work in order to play the game online. As well as in a land-based casino.
How to play the game of roulette in 4 easy steps:
- Place your bet on the roulette table
- The croupier will spin the wheel and throw in the ball. In a brick-and-mortar or live casino, the croupier will say ‘no more bets’ at this point. You can no longer change your bet
- The ball will land in one of the slots on the wheel
- If you have chosen the correct number/colour, or made a bet combination which included this number/colour, then you win. All other bets lose
While there are different variations of the game, they all follow the same basic rules.
The roulette wheel
The wheel is where the game is played. The wheel is spun and the ball thrown in. The idea is to correctly guess where the ball will land.
The wheel is divided into numbered and coloured slots. The numbers are 0-36, which are not in order around the wheel. And each slot is alternated with the colours red and black. The exception to this is the 0, which is green.
It’s important to note that the green 0 gives the casino what is known as the ‘house edge’. Because the amount of numbers, as well as the black and red slots, are all even this would give you a 50% chance of making a correct prediction on odds/evens and colours. However, with the green 0 thrown in, your odds are now slightly less, and the casino’s slightly more.
The house edge is very small, but it gives them a slightly greater chance of winning.
The table
The roulette wheel might be what we all think of when we envision roulette. But it’s the table where you make your money!
The roulette table is where you place your bets, and it’s divided into different sections. Trying to predict one number correctly is extremely difficult, so it makes sense that there are lots of other combos you can bet on as well.
The most common bets placed are:
- Straight up: 1 number
- Split: 2 numbers
- Trio: 3 numbers
- Corner: 4 numbers
- Line: 6 numbers
- Column: 12 numbers
- Red/Black: 18 numbers
- Odds/Evens: 18 numbers
So, you can see that there are many ways to bet in this game. Of course, all these bets will have different odds attached. And it’s up to you if you want to go for high-risk bets, like placing everything on one number (straight up). Or whether to play it safe with a spread-out bet, like a ‘column bet’, where you have more chances to win.
Different types of roulette
The most common version is European roulette. You can find this across all roulette sites, and is the standard in land-based casinos in the UK as well.
Other types of roulette include:
- American roulette: this version adds in a green 00, increasing the house edge. But it also has more betting options, like ‘basket bets’
- French roulette: has the additional ‘la partage’ and ‘en prison’ rules. La partage means you only lose 50% of your bet if you go for the green 0 and lose. However, this version is hard to find, and the minimum bets tend to be higher
- No Zero roulette: you can probably guess that in this variation there’s no green 0. While this eliminates the house edge, casino’s often add a 10% commission to winnings
- Double Ball roulette: as the name suggests, this is where there are 2 balls instead of 1!
Some casinos offer even more versions, like Lightning Roulette and Mini Roulette. There are tons to choose from. So there’s a roulette version for every taste.
Roulette RTP (Return to player)
Return to Player (RTP) is the percentage of your money that you should get back over a certain period of time. While this number is hypothetical, it gives you a good idea of how much of your original stake you should expect to return to you, if you play a game for a long time.
For example, some games have an RTP of between 60% and 70%, which is not bad. However, roulette has one of the highest RTPs of any casino game out there, with an average of over 90%.
In fact, European and French roulette have an RTP of 97.30%. And, with ‘la partage’ in play, French roulette’s RTP can rise above 98%. On the other hand, American roulette’s RTP is lower, at around 94.74%, due to the green 00 which gives the house a bigger edge.
Our review process for online roulette
Our expert reviewers work hard to bring you the best news and reviews from the UK casino world. And they take their work seriously!
When looking for a great new roulette casino site, they look at the following things:
Varied selection of roulette games
Does the site offer their customers a great selection of roulette? As we’ve seen, there are loads of fun variations of this game, and we want to make sure that our customers have access to all of them.
So, our experts carefully go through each casino’s roulette catalogue, to make sure you’re getting the best selection on the market.
Offers live roulette
With the rise in popularity of live casino games, any site worth its salt will offer live roulette. This is where you play with a real croupier. And it’s as close to being in a real casino as possible, without actually walking out of your front door.
One of the best things about live roulette is that you can enable the chat function and actually speak with the croupier. This makes things more fun and adds in the human element that is sometimes missing from online casinos.
Therefore, our experts make sure that the casinos we recommend have a great selection of live casino games, including roulette.
Offers specific roulette bonuses
Did you know that you can pick up bonuses at online casinos specifically for roulette? Our reviewers carefully vet each site and their offers, to see which ones have the best bonuses. And some sites will offer welcome bonuses and other rewards for customers who play on roulette.
So, always check our lists of trusted and reviewed casinos, to see where you can snag a great bonus offer as a roulette player.
Good customer service
One thing that you should never underestimate is the importance of great customer service at your chosen casino site. Most players just assume that every brand will offer a fantastic client experience. But years of reviewing thousands of the best online gambling sites UK has taught us that you can never take this for granted.
We want to ensure that our readers receive the very best customer experience wherever they play. So we always look for a comprehensive set of contact points and 24/7 access to their customer support.
The very minimum that you should expect is email support followed by more instant methods. These include telephone contact, webchat and contact forms, for example.
Games available on mobile
Playing a free roulette spin and other classic casino games on your mobile devices is a top way to access the action. It’s super convenient and you won’t lose any of the quality that you get via your laptop or PC.
Any casino worth its salt will have a perfectly optimised mobile site that gives you seamless gaming action every time. We don’t want to see grainy images with slow loading times. Players want the best and we’ll only present you with options for brands that can deliver.
Before you play roulette online, always check your data plan with your mobile provider first. If you aren’t connected to WiFi, then you need to consider any data usage limitations that may be in place.
What to consider when picking your roulette casino
So, as a customer, what should you be looking for in an online casino that offers roulette?
✔️ Has a good selection of roulette games
As with any casino, you want a great selection of games. And it’s no different as a roulette player. Look for sites that have a variety of roulette. From classic European to fun and exciting American roulette, make sure your next favourite casino has a great catalogue of roulette varieties for you to play.
✔️ Live Roulette dealers
Make sure that you find casinos that not only offer a variety of different types of roulette. But that also offer live roulette too. Experience the thrills of playing with a real-life croupier. And enable the chat function, to speak with them directly.
Live casino has revolutionised online gambling. And a great casino will offer their players a wide variety of roulette, including live casino versions.
✔️ Has bonuses specifically for roulette players
As we’ve seen, some casinos offer specific bonuses for roulette customers. There are lots of different types of bonus to be had, so check a casino’s ‘promotions’ section to see what offers you can get your hands on by playing roulette.
Alternatively, check our lists of casinos. Our expert reviewers update them regularly. And we’ll keep you up-to-date on where has the best offers for roulette customers.
✔️ Is licensed by the UKGC
Another fundamental element that you must consider is the legal status of that site. Just because a brand has the right to provide gambling games in one country doesn’t mean they can offer them in yours.
Gambling laws differ throughout the world. And in countries like the USA, there are different laws for each of the states. Therefore, in some cases, it can be difficult for players to know where they can go. But in the UK, it is very straightforward. You can play at a site with a UKGC licence. And that’s it!
The casino will display their licence number clearly on their website for you to see. Furthermore, they’ll wear it like a badge of honour. So if you can’t find it, then that should raise a red flag.
Online roulette game types
There are plenty of different variations for fans of roulette. Each one differs slightly from the next, but they all have a very similar structure. It’s great to have a good selection as you never know which one you may prefer to use when placing your free roulette bet. Try them out and see which one you find most entertaining!
American roulette
Let’s start with the most obvious downside to this game. American roulette not only has a ‘0’ in play but also a ‘00’ as well. This gives the casino a far larger house edge than some of the other versions. So you may be wondering why you would even consider this if you stand to win less in the long run. The simple answer is that you have more betting opportunities.
Obviously, you can place a straight-up bet on the ‘00’ but there is also another bet type that emerges. This is known as the basket bet. It’s a simple bet that covers the 0, 00, 1, 2 & 3. It’s nice to have this extra option but you might want to consider the house edge. It stands at 7.89%, which may put you off – and probably should!
European roulette
The European version of the game is believed to have been adapted from the French game that we’ll take a look at in a moment. It consists of the standard numbers from 0 to 36. This allows a host of different bet types that cover various numbers, as we saw earlier.
It is not as popular in American casinos due to the much smaller house edge. Playing with just one ‘0’ option gives the house a 2.6% edge, which is pretty decent overall. It is the preferred version in UK casinos so it’s always easy to find.
French roulette
France is where our obsession with the roulette wheel all began some 300 years ago. The game was very similar back then to what we know now. But as it grew in popularity, a few rules began to change. And the main reason this happened was that French roulette offers the best chances for a player to profit in the long run.
The french table has one ‘0’ option, as does its European counterpart. But it also gives the player options when the ball lands on zero that the other variants don’t. If you’ve placed an outside bet on black/red, for example, then there’s no way you can win if the ball lands on zero. But the French ‘la partage’ rule offers you a solution.
You can either take 50% of your stake back with the casino keeping the other half. Or you can leave the whole thing ‘en prison’. Your stake can now stay for another spin. If you win the next spin, then you simply get your old stake back. You don’t win anything for the new spin but at least you didn’t lose anything on the previous one either. This reduces the house edge to just 1.35%.
Lightning roulette
Lightning roulette is a game by Evolution Gaming. This producer is an industry leader in live casino games and has some of the very best titles around. Regular live roulette online is usually a straightforward live version of European roulette. But the lightning game presents a little something extra.
Apart from the flashing lights and hi-tech mix of live dealer and RNG-based mechanics, the game adds a multiplier feature to proceedings. In each game, between 1 and 5 random multiplier values are added to the wheel. And if your stake is on one of those numbers and you win, then your prize is multiplied.
How roulette is played
Whether at a land-based casino, or on an online site, roulette is super easy to play. At an online casino, simply go to the ‘table games’ or ‘live casino’ section and look for the version you want to play.
You should be able to find lots of different types, including classic European roulette. As well as fun versions, like Mini Roulette or Lightning Roulette. Also, live casino roulette with a real croupier.
Now that you know the rules, it’s time to place your bets and have some fun!
What strategy can I use?
Roulette is a game rooted in luck. Unlike poker, where you can outsmart your competitors, in roulette you’re competing against odds. Nothing more. And there aren’t any clever tactics you can use to outwit a ball!
However, you can give yourself a better chance of winning by placing strategic bets. For example, a straight up bet will give you a bigger win. But the chances of you guessing the correct number out of 36 is very slim. Plus, with the house edge in play, your winning odds on a straight up bet are 35:1.
So, if you want a safer bet, try going for something like odds or evens. These each have 1:1 odds. But, of course, your winnings will be lower.
It’s up to you how you want to play the game. And that’s one of the reasons it’s so much fun!
Keep in mind that there is no strategy that will “make you win” in Roulette. Many systems, such as the Martingale system, have been used over the years. But the house will always have the edge.
Live Roulette – The closest you can get to real casino gaming
If you love the thrill and excitement that only a real casino can bring, then you might want to look into the live versions on offer. By getting up close and personal with everything on display at a live casino, you get an experience like no other.
For some, there is a fear of the unknown. But you can take our word for it – it is amazing.
Everything is laid out in front of you just as it is on the casino floor. You get a professional dealer, who you can chat to if you wish. This allows you to ask any questions that spring to mind. And all of the games are filmed from multiple angles. This not only offers peace of mind but also heightens the realistic feel.
New Roulette sites UK 2024
New roulette online sites are on the rise and this is awesome for fans of this classic game. It can be hard to know where to find these sites if you aren’t sure where to look. But luckily, top review sites like ours will pull them all together in one place.
We take the guesswork out of choosing a new brand and give each one a thorough assessment. If they aren’t up to scratch, then they don’t make it onto our list.
Take a look at the casinos available on this page and you can even land yourself a top welcome bonus as well. Playing roulette for free and still walking away with some winnings is always the preferred choice for most players.
Advantages of playing at new sites
New roulette sites present an incredible range of games. As a newbie in the business, they will do everything they can to offer a huge game selection to attract new customers. Moreover, a top game selection will also give you an indication that the casino has a good reputation among the game providers. And this is always important.
Another reason to play at new sites is that everything is fresh and easy to navigate. Creating a new site with the latest tech always creates an amazing experience for the customer.
And don’t forget the top offers available as well. A new brand will be keen to attract new customers and one of the best ways to do this is to hand out fantastic welcome offers.
Advantages of playing at older sites
Older roulette sites do have some advantages too. As a tried and tested brand, they have the benefit of time and experience. They will have been perfecting their business for a while and have a good idea of what the customer likes.
You may also find that an older roulette online site has some of the more classic games available too. A traditional casino could well have a great back catalogue of amazing slots and other table games like roulette, for example.
Mobile roulette gambling sites
Playing free bets roulette on your phone is the latest and most comfortable way to play. It may not be for everybody, but the vast majority are eager to access the fun from their phone.
By playing online roulette on a mobile device you get to play whenever and wherever you are. And if you have a long wait or journey, for instance, then playing roulette on your phone can help pass the time.
All of the sites that appear here on this page have a top mobile version that you can use if you wish. And this can be done in 2 ways.
Browser based roulette casinos
Playing roulette online games via your phone browser is what many fans are used to. It was the original format and we’ve all grown used to it over the years.
You simply need to connect to the internet using your phone’s browser and type in the casino’s web address. You can even save the address to your favourites if you don’t want to type it in each time.
The roulette casino online will be a perfectly optimised version of the main website. But everything will be tweaked to appear smoothly across mobile devices, regardless of the screen size. All of your account info is accessible along with all the latest games.
Downloading an app
The alternative to browser access is to download the casino app. Not every brand will have one. But there are loads that do. So what’s the advantage of using an app?
Everything is slightly more streamlined. Rather than accessing the casino’s website each time, it is done instantly at the push of an icon on your phone’s screen. This reduces load times as your phone will already have some of the important data saved internally.
Keep an eye out for brands offering deals for players using their app as well. Occasionally, you may find that a site offers an incentive to download its app. It may not be huge but it could be a few spins or some credit to use on an online roulette casino game.
Real money roulette vs. Free roulette
Did you know that you can play free online roulette? That’s right – no money and no risk. But why would you play free roulette games? Are they better than real money roulette? Let’s see.
Playing free roulette
Playing online roulette for real money is fun. There’s no doubt about that. But, as with all gambling, it comes with financial risk.
If you’re not in a position to gamble with real cash, then you should consider playing free versions of the game. They’re still super fun and have amazing graphics and sounds. Plus, you can never put yourself in financial danger.
Another good reason for playing free roulette, is as a way to practice your skills before playing with real money. Try out free European roulette, to learn the standard game. And then test your skills with other varieties, like No Zero Roulette. Once you’re confident in your skills, and now the rules for each game, then you can decide whether or not you want to play for real cash prizes.
Roulette online for real money
Some people love roulette free play. And will never play for money. They simply love the game itself and the thrill of beating the odds.
However, nothing can compare to the feeling of winning real cash at a real money casino! If you love roulette, and you’re in a good financial position, then there’s no reason you can’t have some fun and win some cold hard cash along the way.
Bonuses for roulette
As we’ve seen, there are some casinos that offer bonuses specifically for some types of games. And at roulette sites, you can take advantage of lots of bonuses as a roulette player.
No deposit roulette bonus
One of the most popular types of casino bonus is the no deposit bonus. This is where a casino will give you bonus cash to play with, without you having to make a deposit with them. Pretty cool, right? Most no deposit bonuses can be used to play across different games at the casino, roulette included. So, use your no deposit bonus to play your favourite version of roulette with no risk on your part.
Welcome bonus for roulette
Also known as a welcome package, a welcome bonus is any type of bonus offered to new customers at a casino. They might include a deposit bonus, free spins for slots games or no deposit bonuses.
Aside from free spins, most bonuses can be used to play on roulette. Although, sometimes live casino games are excluded.
Roulette reload bonus
Great casinos will take care of their regular customers. And one of the best bonuses you’ll see as a returning player is the reload bonus. Get bonus cash added to your bankroll by depositing with the same casino again. And then head to the roulette tables.
These offers tend to come up sporadically – usually weekly or monthly.
Roulette with progressive jackpots
You might think that progressive jackpots are just for slots games. Well, think again! With roulette and other table games now offering progressive jackpots, you could win life-changing sums of money just for playing your favourite version of roulette.
Progressive jackpots accumulate over time, with a little of every player’s stake being pooled into one giant pot. Then, randomly, one lucky customer will scoop the whole lot. And now, with advancements in gaming tech, progressives can now be won on classic table games too.
Wagering terms explained
Any bonuses that you receive for signing up for a new casino account will likely be subject to wagering. It’s a simple concept but can make profiting from bonus cash or spins slightly harder.
You will need to gamble with the bonus a number of times before you can cash out any winnings. So bear this in mind before selecting a massive online roulette bonus offer.
Game weighting explained
During the wagering process, you will be allowed to play certain games at the casino. Some games will count 100% towards the wagering. And this is usually true of most slot machines. However, most table games will have a reduced percentage. Roulette may only count 30% or even less towards the wagering requirements.
Are there progressive jackpots for Roulette?
Yes. It is possible to find this awesome feature on some RNG versions of roulette. They aren’t all that common but it’s still possible to find them at some roulette sites.
Progressive jackpots explained
In much the same way that a slot can accumulate a big prize, so too can a roulette machine. By making a small side bet, you will contribute to a progressive prize. And this can drop for one lucky player at any time.
Roulette game providers
Have you ever wondered who makes your casino games? The best UK casino operators work with the leading software companies in the world, to bring you amazing games, including online casino roulette.
Amazing graphics and sound effects, along with seamless gameplay, make for an incredible casino experience. But who are these companies that make the games that you love?
Evolution Gaming
One of the most popular software developers in the world, Evolution Gaming have become synonymous with live casino games. In fact, they’re responsible for Lightning Roulette, which is a fun twist on the original game.
Established in 2006, they’ve become leaders in high-tech, super modern gaming. If you want a top-notch live casino experience, then look for sites that carry Evolution Gaming.
Playtech
Another giant of the games industry, Playtech have been keeping clients happy since they were founded in 1999. With over 20 years’ experience in the sector, Playtech know a thing or two about games!
With both live casino software and RNG-powered roulette, as well as other games such as slots, Playtech have their finger in every pie. Plus, with most of their games optimised for mobile and tablet play, this games company moves with the times. So now, you can play on roulette any time, any place, with Playtech.
Extreme Live Gaming
This games company was at the forefront of live casino gaming, bringing out some incredible roulette versions and other titles. In fact, they were so good, that they were quickly bought up by their competitors, Novomatic, in around 2016.
Then, in 2018, Extreme Gaming was acquired by Pragmatic Play; another huge name in the industry. Nowadays, Pragmatic Play uses Extreme Live Gaming’s incredible cutting-edge tech to bring out some of the best roulette and other table game versions around.
Microgaming
Finally, we come to one of the biggest names in the online casino gaming world: Microgaming. This company is known for making some of the best games on the market, with a catalogue that stretches back well over 20 years.
Probably best known for slots, Microgaming is actually responsible for some of the best table games online as well. Check out their very own Multifire Roulette, for a fun twist on the original.
Payment solutions for Roulette sites UK
Wherever you choose to play, one of the most important factors is the selection of payment options available.
Not everybody has a bank account. Moreover, not all players want to use their bank account directly to make a casino deposit. There are privacy issues that many take very seriously. So it’s good if a site can offer its customers various options.
There are loads of different products available on the market and they each have their pros and cons. Which one you choose is a matter of personal preference. But you might want to take some of the following info into consideration before making a final choice.
Internet wallets
Internet wallets, or e-wallets as they are also known, are fantastic for players who love the privacy element. You can transfer money into your wallet from a range of sources and then use it to pay for other purchases. Making a casino deposit is one such purchase that you can make.
There are a few big names in the e-wallet industry and you may have heard of Skrill, Neteller or PayPal.
They all have small fees associated with loading up your account. But the casinos, generally, don’t charge anything for accepting payment in this way.
Payments are fast and secure and you can make withdrawals too.
Debit cards
Debit cards are perhaps the best-known form of online payment. They take money directly from your bank and send it straight to the seller. This is usually pretty instant and doesn’t cost anything to do so. To access your cash, you simply need to enter the card details when requested. This makes the method both fast and convenient.
Most people have a bank account so it’s very likely that you will have access to a debit card if you wish. However, some customers are still wary about using their card details online and prefer to stick to other options such as e-wallets, for example.
You can make deposits pretty instantly but withdrawals may take a couple of days to complete.
Wire transfers
Making a wire transfer was the payment method of choice for some time. Although it did involve taking a trip down to your local bank branch back in the old days. Things moved online eventually, and now it’s possible to request electronic transfers straight from your internet banking.
To pay by this method will require the bank details for the roulette online casino where you wish to play. And this can create a slow-moving process. The casino cannot authorise your payment until someone physically acknowledges the payment into the casino account. And then they must update your player account.
This has created a time delay of up to several days in some cases. And most players aren’t prepared to wait this long. It may be super secure but it’s certainly not the quickest.
Recently, a new product called ‘instant transfers’ has appeared on the market. And these help to reduce the time restriction that you face when paying by bank transfer. The 3rd party provider will send the money into your casino account directly. But you will have to pay them for their services.
Pay by phone
Paying by phone is super simple and is fairly common in the UK. Many casinos will accept this form of payment. You can use funds that are sitting in your phone top-up credit or add them to your monthly bill.
There are a couple of big brands offering this service at top casino sites. So keep your eyes peeled for Payforit and Boku.
There are 2 big downsides to this method. The first is that there’s a limit of £10 in any one transaction. And this can mean missing out on welcome bonuses that require a larger deposit.
It is possible to deposit up to £30 per day but this may not be enough for some players. Certainly, high rollers will find this method very restrictive.
And the issue is that you cannot send any winnings back the other way. To make a withdrawal you will need to enter alternative payment details. You may decide that it’s easier to simply make a payment using one of the other products in the first place. But it’s your call!
Roulette – a history overview
Roulette has been around since the 1700s. And we have the French to thank for bringing this game to our attention. It began with a very favourable set of rules for players known as ‘la partage’, which reduced the house edge drastically.
As the game made its way across Europe, these rules were removed. And when it landed in the US, they even added another ‘00’ section to the wheel.
French roulette remains the most player-friendly version available today.
